YOUR 1982 PENNY COULD BE WORTH A FORTUNE – HERE’S WHY
A 1982-D Lincoln penny with a small date on a copper planchet is one of the rarest modern errors, selling for $10,000+ at auction. If you’ve been saving change, you might have this treasure!

3 STEPS TO IDENTIFY A $10,000+ 1982 PENNY
1. Check the Mint Mark & Year
- Must be 1982-D (Denver mint).
- Philadelphia (no mint mark) and San Francisco coins don’t have this error.
2. Verify the Date Style
- Small Date:
- The “8” and “2” are the same height.
- The “2” has a thin, curved tail.
- ❌ Large Date:
- The “8” hangs below the “2”.
- The “2” is thicker and straight (not curved).
3. Weigh It
- Copper (Valuable): 3.11 grams (pre-1982 composition).
- Zinc (Normal): 2.5 grams (post-1982 standard).
WHY IS THIS PENNY SO VALUABLE?
- Transition Year: 1982 was the last year for copper pennies.
- Mint Mistake: A few copper planchets were accidentally used in Denver.
- Rarity: Only a handful confirmed by PCGS/NGC.
Recent Sale: A 1982-D Small Date Copper MS-64 sold for $18,800 at Heritage Auctions.
BONUS: DOUBLE DIE ERRORS (WORTH EVEN MORE!)
If your 1982-D penny also has:
- Doubled “LIBERTY” or date → Value could reach $50,000+.
WHAT TO DO IF YOU FIND ONE
- Don’t Clean It! (Preserve the surfaces.)
- Get It Graded (PCGS/NGC authentication = 10x value).
- Sell Through:
- Heritage Auctions (for $10K+ coins).
- eBay (for raw coins under $10K).
