“Virgin Territory” is a 2007 romantic comedy film directed by David Leland. The movie is a modern take on Giovanni Boccaccio’s 14th-century Italian literary classic, “The Decameron.” It stars Hayden Christensen, Mischa Barton, and Tim Roth.
Set in Tuscany during the time of the Black Death, the film follows a group of young Florentines who escape the plague by taking refuge in a country villa. Instead of simply telling stories, as in the original source material, they engage in a series of lusty adventures, romantic entanglements, and humorous escapades.
The plot centers on the beautiful Pampinea (Mischa Barton), who finds herself alone and broke after her parents die from the plague. She is pursued by the villainous Gerbino (Tim Roth), who wants her wealth. Meanwhile, the charming but roguish Lorenzo (Hayden Christensen) falls for Pampinea and must find a way to win her heart and defeat his rival. Their intertwining stories involve disguises, randy nuns, and sword fights.
“Virgin Territory” was met with largely negative reviews, with many critics finding it to be an uninspired and unfunny sex comedy, despite the beautiful Italian locations and the efforts of its cast.
